Announcing our bold, new campaign: "Cellular Agriculture for the Public Good."

Announcing the Preprint of our Review on AI and ML in Cultured Meat

Our collaborative project, funded by Schmidt Futures

In December 2022, we announced the AI in Cell Ag Initiative, a collaboration with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) to investigate the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in cellular agriculture. AI and ML techniques could address several of these technical and economic questions, creating the opportunity to radically advance our collective mission to make these products a reality.

For over a year, we have worked with a team of cellular agriculture, biology, and machine learning scientists to survey the opportunities for AI and ML techniques to address technical and economic challenges in cultured meat. After many discussions, hours of literature review, and input from many amazing experts in our communities, we are excited to announce the completion of our review of artificial intelligence and machine learning applications for cultured meat!

The manuscript has been submitted for peer review and, in the spirit of open, we have made the preprint available now to begin catalyzing more work in this nascent space.

In this review, we aim to identify opportunities at the intersection between CM and ML, providing the necessary foundation for CM researchers who want to explore ML solutions as well as ML experts who want to apply their work to solve challenges in CM. Take a look and let us know what you think!

This project is a collaboration between New Harvest and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii).  The project is supported by Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt.

A special thank you to Zachary Consenza (New Harvest fellowship alumnus) for kicking off this project with his initial review of the topic (which you can check out here!) and his input throughout the writing of this manuscript. In addition, thank you to Roy Nadler (Google Research), Amin Nikkhah (Tufts University), Dave Staszak (Amii), Charlie Taylor (Multus Media), and Sofia Giampaoli (and the rest of the team at Alt Atlas) for reviewing early drafts of this manuscript and providing valuable insights. Finally, thank you to Evan Rapoport for his facilitative leadership on this project since the beginning.
