About New Harvest Canada
New Harvest is now in Canada! In 2020 we decided to register in Canada as a nonprofit entity. This allows us to apply for Canadian government grants and to hire Canadian staff. Our Canadian headquarters is in Edmonton and we now have three Canadian staff members.
What does it mean to be a Canadian nonprofit?
New Harvest is registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the United States, but being a nonprofit organization (NPO) in Canada is a bit different. NPOs in Canada operate for a purpose other than to make a profit, such as social welfare or civic engagement, and no part of its income may be paid or made available for the personal benefit of any proprietor, member, or shareholders. However, NPOs in Canada cannot issue donation receipts to donors, only a registered charity—which is more similar to a US 501(c)(3)—is permitted to do this.
What does this mean for donors?
As New Harvest Canada is a nonprofit and not a charitable organization, Canadian donors are not eligible to receive tax credits for donations or gifts made to New Harvest Canada.
