New Harvest Culley Carlson Award: A New Funding Opportunity for Researchers

Published June 15, 2024 | Updated November 15, 2024 | Breanna Duffy

Like many others in cellular agriculture, I was trained in an adjacent field – in my case, tissue engineering for medical applications. As I neared the end of my PhD, I became increasingly concerned about how the food we eat impacts the climate, our health, and animal welfare. When I completed my degree, I was lucky to have had the right connections and opportunities to make the leap into cellular agriculture.

This is a common story for much of the field’s workforce right now. We are only just starting to see cellular agriculture trained doctoral students entering the workforce. Meanwhile, there are many of us with deep expertise in adjacent areas who are eager to apply our knowledge to create sustainable and ethical food systems.

I am pleased to announce a new funding opportunity at New Harvest, supported by the Culley Carlson Foundation, aimed to support students to do just that.

The New Harvest-Culley Carlson Award is designed for students in doctoral programs or other similar level professional degrees (e.g. J.D.) who discovered the field of cellular agriculture late in their training.

The award will provide financial and professional support for the awardee to apply their skills to cellular agriculture and make connections within the field. Applicants can be from any field of study, such as biology, engineering, computer science, sociology, policy, economics, or law (just to name a few). Applicants must show how their expertise is relevant to cellular agriculture and have a clear vision of how to apply it.

Applications are due August 1, 2024.

We hope this provides an opportunity for more students to make the leap into cellular agriculture for their careers!
