New Harvest is sponsoring a symposium at the 2012 Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting and Food Expo, to be held Wednesday, June 27 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The symposium, titled '”New Frontiers in Sustainable, Animal-Independent Dietary Protein Production Technologies” will explore the rationale behind animal-free dietary protein development and topics ranging from the next generation of plant-based eggs and meat to prospective technologies for cultured meat production. Listed under the sustainability track, the symposium can be accessed through the following link.

New Harvest is a nonprofit research organization working to develop new alternatives to conventionally-produced meat, including cultured meat — meat produced in a cell culture, rather than in an animal.

Because such alternatives can be produced under controlled conditions impossible to maintain in traditional animal farms, they can be safer, more nutritious, less polluting, and more humane than conventional meat.
